If this Christmas was the straw that broke the back of your boiler, chances are you’re frantically scouring the internet right now, on the hunt for a new heart of your home. You may also be doing this while shivering in a cold home, so we’ll make it snappy.
When considering a new boiler for your home, you need to think about your options based on boiler efficiency, its size, and the specific heating needs of your household, not to mention the constraints of budget.
As a nation we’ve not deviated far off the well-trodden paths forged by the following boilers, with the Combi being a firm favourite of your average British home.
Combi boilers are a popular choice in our homes. Prized for their efficiency and space-saving design. They provide both hot water and central heating from a single unit. Well-suited to smaller homes with one bathroom, they deliver hot water on demand without the need for a separate water storage tank.
System boilers are ideal for homes with multiple bathrooms and higher hot water demand. They incorporate a separate hot water cylinder, providing a constant supply of hot water to multiple outlets simultaneously. So no ice showers or scalding burns in the shower when someone flushes the loo.
Regular boilers are traditional heating systems with a separate hot water cylinder and cold water storage tank. While they may be bulkier and require more space, they are suitable for larger homes with higher hot water demand. Just make sure that you’ve got enough loft space to house the various tanks and components.
A slight anomaly, because it sits across all three of the above, the condensing boiler is known for its high efficiency, as it captures and reuses heat that would otherwise be lost in the flue gases. They are the most common type of boiler in the UK and are available as combi, system, or regular boilers. So whichever boiler you choose, make sure it’s as efficient as the popular condensing boiler. It’s also worth making sure that the energy rating of your new appliance is as good as it gets (A+++). This will save you cash in the long run and reduce your carbon footprint.
