A spotlight on the Combi boiler – the UK’s favourite home boiler

26th October 2023

Man washing dishes with hot water

First developed in response to the energy crisis of the 1970s, when energy conservation became a priority, the combi boiler quickly became both a favourite and a staple of the modern UK home. Minute when compared to bulkier alternatives, the combi boiler can now be found in the majority of British households.

As a country of terraces and semis, we’re not blessed with space. The neat combination boiler offers superb functionality in a compact design, so it can basically heat your home and water from a cupboard. You’ve probably not thought much about your boiler, it just works and that’s that, but here are a few things you probably didn’t know about your trusted combi.

1 It gives you hot water on demand

We’ve all become a little spoiled on this front. Combi boilers provide hot water on demand, meaning you’ll never run out of hot water as long as your boiler is functioning correctly. If you cast your mind back a good few years, or ask your grandparents if you’re lucky enough not to remember, it wasn’t long ago when you had to wait in your towel for the hot water to warm up enough for a wash. The combi is a God send for busy households.

2 Efficiency

Combi boilers are known for their energy efficiency. They only heat water when you need it, which reduces energy wastage. This can result in lower energy bills, making them a cost-effective choice for many. This also makes them greener and a more future proof option if you’re conscious of your household’s carbon footprint.

3 No need for a cold water tank

Unlike some traditional systems, combi boilers don’t require a cold water tank in the loft. This can free up additional space and let’s face it, we’re all converting our lofts now anyway!

4 Flow rate variability

The flow rate of hot water from a combi boiler depends on the model and size of the boiler. If you do live in a bigger house with more demand for hot water, it might not be the best boiler for you. 5 Maintenance benefits

All boilers require regular maintenance and servicing to keep them operating at peak efficiency. The combi is no different. However, because it is the most common boiler in the UK, you won’t come across a qualified, Gas Safe-registered engineer who doesn’t know how to fix it.

6 It uses gas

Your combi boiler relies on a natural gas supply. This means that it needs a Gas Safe-registered engineer to perform work on it annually. You can find out more about regular servicing here.

So there you have it. An A-Z on your combi boiler. If you’re considering a combi for your home, or would like to discuss getting on top of your boiler maintenance, just get in touch with one of our team. We love chatting boilers!
