What are thermostatic radiator valves and why should you install them?

Thermostatic valve on radiator

A fairly recent addition to the UK housing market, and increasing in popularity, thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) are becoming a vital component in regulating heating systems in homes up and down the country. Installed individually, on each radiator in your home, a TRV normally works in conjunction with a smart heating system, to regulate the temperature in your home, allowing for what’s known as ‘zoned heating’. This is basically a way to heat rooms in your home independently from one another.

So, TRVs, the new must-have appliance, or another fad? Read-on to find out more.

As far as we can tell, there are not many cons to this piece of kit, but there are a number of real positives that we think make TRVs a brilliant accessory to the great British home.

You’re in charge

TRVs empower homeowners to achieve precise temperature management, basically meaning that you can heat occupied rooms in your home to a temperature that suits the room inhabitant. Think Seychelles in the sitting-room and Baltic in the bedroom. This capability is particularly beneficial in your average home, where families tussle over the thermostat temperature setting.

Less waste

TRVs put you in the driving seat and because they allow you to choose where the heat goes in your home, completely shutting off heating in unoccupied spaces, you waste less energy heating empty rooms.

The UK has made a commitment to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero targets by 2030, a tall order when you consider how many homes are operating on an energy wasting basis. These valves play a significant role in advancing sustainability initiatives at both individual and national levels. We’re all more conscious of our impact on the environment and, as the UK heads closer to its 2030 emissions deadline, fitting TRVs in your home aligns perfectly with the country’s sustainability goals.

Less strain on your boiler

Because TRVs heat one or two areas of your home at a time, they require much less in the way of input from your home boiler. This modulation conserves energy and reduces the impact on not only your boiler but also your wider heating system, like radiators and pipes. The long-term benefit here is a longer-lasting boiler, with less wear and tear, meaning it’s less likely to break down and cost you a fortune in repair work.

Saving you cash

We’ve mentioned that TRVs save you from wasting energy by only heating occupied areas of your home. That’s great for the planet but also great for your wallet. During winter, heating a room with no one in it is the equivalent of throwing cash out of your front door. So, do yourself a favour and save it instead.

TRVs are a way to save energy, money and the planet, a no-brainer, surely? If you’re still unsure, or you’d like to talk to us about other ways to reduce your energy outgoings, reach out to our friendly team.
