A practical guide to comparing boiler cover packages

When it comes to boiler cover packages, not all products are created equal. The sheer variety of options available can feel overwhelming. But not to worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a handy how-to guide for making sure you choose the right plan for your circumstances.

Understanding your requirements

Before you start comparing packages, it’s important to understand your specific needs. Ask yourself:

  • How old is your boiler? Older boilers can be more expensive to insure, for obvious reasons. In fact, some plans may not even cover them.
  • Do you want cover that includes regular service and safety checks? Servicing your boiler regularly is the best way to make sure it doesn’t collapse on you. We definitely recommend a servicing plan.
  • Do you only need cover or your boiler, or should you include your wider heating system? Some boiler cover plans look after radiators and pipes too, which can be a Godsend in the winter months.

Once you’ve answered these questions, you can start looking at the different boiler care products available.

Check the coverage

The first step in comparing boiler cover packages is to check what’s included. A solid plan should cover:

  • Boiler breakdown: This is the most basic requirement. If your boiler stops working, your package should cover you for the cost of repair or replacement.
  • An annual boiler service: Regular servicing can help prevent breakdowns – any decent care plan should offer this as standard.
  • Emergency callouts: In case your boiler breaks down, double-check that your package offers a 24/7 emergency callout service and what the response time is. No one wants to be waiting two weeks during a cold snap for the heating to come back on.
  • Heating system: Some plans cover the entire heating system, including radiators and pipes. While not a deal-breaker, if you can get a plan that covers this too, you’re sorted for most eventualities.

Compare the costs

Boiler cover packages vary dramatically in price. While we all love a bargain, remember that the cheapest product isn’t necessarily the best. Pay attention to the excess on the plan (the amount you pay towards a claim), as well as the monthly or annual premium. Plans with a lower premium may have a higher excess, and vice versa. Read reviews and ratings

When the worst happens, you need to know your boiler cover provider is on your side. They should be easy to reach, responsive and helpful. Customer reviews and ratings can provide valuable insights into their reliability and the quality of their service. Look for reviews about the claims process, customer service and how quickly and effectively they deal with boiler issues.

Policy limitations and exclusions

Make sure to pay attention to the exclusions detailed in your boiler cover agreement. Some plans won’t cover certain boiler models, boilers beyond a certain age, or boilers that haven’t been serviced regularly – yet another reason to get your boiler serviced annually and make sure it’s well maintained!

No claims discount

If you’ve had a boiler cover plan before and not made a claim, chances are you could be due a discount. Some cover providers offer a no claims discount if you haven’t claimed over a certain period of time. This can be a valuable feature and shave off some welcome savings from your premium.

You should now feel well equipped to start your quest for the perfect boiler cover package. If you’re still feeling lost, or you fancy talking to our team about what great boiler cover should look like, get in touch for a no-pressure chat.
