What is a System boiler?

If you’re thinking of updating your current heating and hot water system, you could do worse than stopping to consider what a System boiler could add to your home. Somewhat contradicting its name, the System boiler doesn’t need a complex structure of various components to do the job of heating your home and hot water.

Working in partnership with only one hot water cylinder, the System boiler heats water directly from the mains. This water is then pumped around the home to heat radiators and fill the hot water cylinder for when hot water is required.

What are the advantages of a System boiler?

Similar to Regular boilers, System boilers come into their own in larger households and conveniently take up less room too, because there is no need for a cumbersome cold water tank in the loft space. They also:

• cost less to install than a Regular boiler, as they require fewer component parts
• allow you to precisely select the hot water cylinder size, according to the needs of your household
• offer hot water for more than one shower at a time, without a drop in water pressure or a change in temperature

What are the cons to installing a System boiler?

While a System boiler can be the answer for many households, they might not suit every home, and here’s why:

• They take up more room than the petite Combi boiler, so may not be right for more bijou properties
• If you already have a Regular boiler installed, it could be less expensive to replace the boiler alone, rather than take on the bigger project of replacing existing pipework, which can be costly
• They can fall down if your water pressure is already quite low
• They’re less energy efficient than a Combi, as you’ll lose heat from the hot water cylinder
• They can let you down if the hot water runs out – you might want to perfect your towel dance routine if you’re the last in a long line for the shower
