Combi-Boilers
What are the differences
& benefits of a combi-boiler?
Combination boilers, or combi boilers, give you hot water when you want it by connecting directly to the mains cold water supply.
They are a really good choice for many homes, especially for smaller properties with one bathroom, because their demand for hot water and heating is lower than that of bigger properties.
As with all boiler types, however, there are pros and cons:
Pros of combi boilers
- Take up less space – combi boilers don’t need a water tank so you’ll have more room
- Appearance – because its components are all neatly contained in its casing, your average combi boiler is more compact and looks tidier
- Easier maintenance and repairs – they’re popular so most engineers are trained to work on combi boilers. This makes it easier to find a qualified one in your local area (but we recommend you call Sensible Heating Solutions first 🙂)
- Instant hot water – no finger-tapping waits for the water tank to heat up – a combi boiler will immediately supply unlimited hot water
Cons of combi boilers
- Only one bath or shower at a time – a combi boiler can struggle when trying to supply hot water to two places in your home at the same time. So you might need to hold off on the shower when someone else is washing the dishes
- Reliant on mains pressure – combi boilers work best in homes with good water pressure. You may want to think again if your water pressure is weak
- Moving parts – because of the mechanics of a combi boiler, there are more moving parts and so greater potential for things to go wrong
